An Ocher-Yellow Shaker Kitchen in the Heart of Dalarna

Elsa and Per bought their house in the small village of Alvik, just outside Leksand, in 2019. Here, nearly every house is painted in traditional Falu red, Midsummer is celebrated in folk costume, and the pride in the local heritage runs deep.

“It’s such a joy to wake up in the morning and be greeted by the yellow kitchen. The scent of wood and linseed oil in the cabinets brings you back in time.”

– Elsa

For Elsa, the place feels very much like home. Her mother grew up in the village, and Elsa herself spent all her childhood summers here. Today, several relatives still live nearby—her aunt, uncle, and cousins—and the village has become a natural gathering place for the family. At the same time, Alvik has attracted more and more visitors from abroad. It’s not uncommon to meet Dutch, German, or French families who have chosen to spend their summers in this beautiful part of Dalarna.

When Elsa and Per bought the house, they quickly felt it was a home they wanted to grow old in. Their hope is that one of their three children will one day take over and let the house remain in the family. Renovating with care and choosing materials that stand the test of time has therefore been a priority from the very beginning.

When planning their new kitchen in the house—built in 1978—they took inspiration from the yellow tone that was already there. They liked the color but found it a bit too light. Instead, they began searching for a deeper shade—something more ocher. At the same time, they wanted the kitchen to reflect the place they live in. Wood, craftsmanship, and colors rooted in Dalarna set the direction.

Finding the right shade proved more difficult than expected. The colors were either too bright and sunny or leaned too much toward brown. The solution came almost by chance when Elsa painted a cabinet door in the same color as the house’s window frames. Later, when the couple installed double doors leading out to the terrace, the light in the room changed—and suddenly, the color came into its own.

The new kitchen comes from Skandinaviska Shakerkök and is painted with linseed oil paint in the shade NCS S 2040-Y20R—a warm ocher yellow. During the process, Elsa and Per also discovered that linseed oil paint can be tinted according to the NCS system, opening up great possibilities for creating a personal expression. The visible brushstrokes on the cabinet fronts are a detail they particularly appreciate, as they enhance the sense of craftsmanship.

The kitchen consists of eight modules from Skandinaviska Shakerkök.

For the yellow cabinetry, the couple chose a white-waxed oak countertop from LG Collection and an undermount sink from Intra. The walls are clad in beadboard painted in NCS 1507-Y16R—a light, warm tone that harmonizes beautifully with the ocher kitchen.

The shaker style is simple and timeless, yet the kitchen incorporates several modern solutions. Solid wood drawers make organization easy, and a cabinet with pull-out drawers provides space for pots and heavy cookware. Discreet spotlights in cabinets and shelving create a soft, functional light.
Today, the kitchen is the natural heart of the home. It’s where everyday meals are prepared, baking happens, and coffee is enjoyed—a kitchen made for living, and one that will remain part of the house for many years to come.
