The croft in Lilla Roslätt

The croft in Lilla Roslätt

The croft, which was previously used as a residence for the estate’s servants and other staff, was originally leased by Skabersjö Gods. In connection with a change of ownership in the 1980s, several of the estate’s buildings in the area were sold.
The kitchen is one of many spaces on the croft that has been carefully renovated. With respect for the origin and history of the residence.

– Jens

Today, Jens lives here year-round with his cat Bosse, and the croft is managed with great care and respect for both the history of the place and its future.

The kitchen fits perfectly with the old door

The cottage has been a natural part of Jens’ family since the 1960s. Back then, it was used as a summer cottage, a place where his grandfather and mother in particular could indulge in their great interest in farming and enjoy the Skåne countryside. Summer life here was simple but charming – with an outdoor toilet in the yard and cold water in the kitchen tap.

During the 1980s, Jens spent many sunny days with his grandmother and grandfather, and in the 1990s, the step was taken to make the croft a year-round residence, with a shower, bath and slightly more modern amenities – without losing that genuine feeling of simplicity.

Jens took over the cottage and when the time came for a major renovation, Jens chose to do the work with a gentle hand. When it came to the kitchen, a holistic approach was needed, as both the bathroom and the kitchen floor needed to be repaired.

– I knew that if I were to renovate one day, I would have to start from the existing floor plan. Placing the sink by the window facing the garden felt just right, and with custom-made cabinets and a countertop that extends all the way into the window niche, the kitchen has a much more inviting feel than before.

The evening light seeps beautifully into the kitchen.

– My previous kitchen had a lot of open storage with shelves, hanging utensils and a slightly charmingly messy feel. Now I wanted to try the opposite. The open storage I currently have is a shelf for essentials above the stove, the built-in shelves next to the sink and the magnetic knife holder.

In another corner, dry goods coexist with beautiful trays, cups and other decorative items that are welcome to be displayed.
The spices are stored in a drawer by the stove, close at hand for the cook.

The entire surface was torn out to insulate the foundation and lay new floors, while the electricity and pipes were rerouted to fit a new, more functional floor plan.

– Doors with drawers behind them were an early choice. I like the symmetry it creates with the framed doors while also providing more modern, practical storage with the large drawers.
– Another choice I’m particularly happy with is increasing the depth of the workbench from 60 to 70 cm – which is not noticeable at all in terms of lost floor space but makes a huge difference on the bench, it was a “no-brainer”.

The choice of materials shows great respect for the history of the cottage. Jens decided early on to use a solid wooden kitchen – both for its durability and because it harmonizes with the age and character of the building. Together with Skandinaviska Shakerkök, he developed custom solutions that made the most of every corner of the small kitchen, where slanted walls and uneven angles became part of the charm rather than an obstacle. The result was a kitchen that feels solid, warm and naturally at home in the house.
– A bonus with my wooden kitchen that I appreciate is that it makes it relatively easy to repaint on the day you feel it looks tired or you simply want a new look.
