Shaker kitchen in Gothenburg

A shaker kitchen in Gothenburg

Would you like someone else to decide the type of kitchen you have in your home? That’s exactly what happened with a housing association in the early 90s in Majorna, Gothenburg. The pipes, kitchen, and bathroom were renovated and all apartments were given identical kitchens.

When Hannah and Erik moved into their apartment in this condominium association in 2014, they felt it was time to replace the kitchen.

– The kitchen that was there wasn’t very functional. There was hardly any work space and the refrigerator was almost in the hall, says Hannah.

The property was built in 1906 and is located in Majorna, Gothenburg. The area is mainly inhabited by young people and families with children. It is a trendy area, comparable to “Söder” in Stockholm. There are condominiums mixed with rental apartments. Both older and newer houses.

The fact that it is made of solid wood and is therefore durable was important to us.”

– Hannah, @hannahperssons

Hannah and Erik wanted a kitchen that matched the apartment better, a kitchen that felt rustic and built to fit in. After searching around the internet – mainly Pinterest and Instagram – Hannah came across SCANDINAVISKA SHAKERKÖK which felt just right.

– The fact that it is made of solid wood and is therefore durable was important to us. This is not a kitchen the next owner will want to change or throw out,” says Hannah. “It will last a long time, both from a style and sustainability perspective.

Fog gray kitchen and wooden knobs

The color they chose for the kitchen is from the basic range of Scandinavian Shaker Kitchens and is called “Dimgrå” (Fog Grey). The countertops are made of oak and the unpainted wooden knobs match it nicely. The table, chairs and lamp are vintage finds. Even the vase, which is probably an old chemical flask according to Hannah, is also a second-hand find.

Thoughts on kitchen planning

The couple had a sketch of what they wanted their new kitchen to look like but then got help from Scandinavian Shaker Kitchens to refine the planning and add details around storage.

– We focused a lot on drawers instead of cabinets, because we like the good overview you get in a drawer.

Both the dishwasher and refrigerator are integrated – they have fronts in the same wood and color as the kitchen – something the kitchen before definitely didn’t have.

Even though the countertop is deeper, 70 cm, there is plenty of space in the kitchen.

“If you can have 70 cm, you should choose it!”

Extra deep countertop

One choice that the couple is particularly pleased with is the countertop, which has been given an extra 10 cm depth, creating an even larger work surface. 60 cm is what is otherwise standard.

– If you can have 70 cm, you should choose it!, says Erik.

“We can change and repaint our kitchen without any problems in the future.”

Another detail they appreciate is the customization options around the kitchen.

– A machine-made kitchen with chipboard and laminate cannot be changed or repaired if necessary. We can repaint and change our kitchen without any problems, says Erik.

– For example, we have already given our worktop a little extra love by oiling it to get a special finish, adds Hannah.

They have also moved a shelf inside a cabinet so that even the tallest wine glasses would have space. Erik says:

– We didn’t think about that measurement when we designed the kitchen, but it was no problem to change it afterwards. That’s what’s so great about a kitchen made of solid wood! You can make such changes afterwards if you want.
