Green shaker kitchen in Enhörna

Green shaker kitchen in Enhörna

In Enhörna, outside Södertälje, there was a deserted house that Frida and Pontus took a liking to. A house that was not habitable and required serious effort.

Today, the kitchen is neat and tidy, but it is a far cry from what it looked like when the family took over the house.
The old kitchen cabinets that could be saved were supplemented with new kitchen cabinets.
The kitchen, like many other rooms, was in really bad shape. However, Frida and Pontus wanted to preserve as much as possible, which in their case meant saving the kitchen furnishings that could be saved. For Frida, who is a trained building antiquarian, it was no stranger to the decision.

“I honestly can’t think of any reason why you wouldn’t want to maintain your house.”

The existing old kitchen cabinets that could be saved in the kitchen were complemented with kitchen furnishings from Scandinavian Shaker Kitchens and everything was painted in the same color to blend in nicely.
Details such as a cobbler’s lamp, scrubbed floors and rag rug fit perfectly into the villa.

Three doorways, one large window and only about 7 square meters of floor space.

The choice of kitchen fell on a classic shaker kitchen from Scandinavian Shaker Kitchen, a kitchen with a shaker door with a stylish and straight profile, which is also very similar to the original cabinets.

But planning the kitchen wasn’t the easiest. The kitchen has three doorways and only 7 square meters of floor space. It was important for the couple to create a modern and functional kitchen with a classic look, but at the same time not to destroy the feel of the old kitchen that has been in the house since 1912.

The old upper cabinet with a vaulted base is a memory from the kitchen that was there before.
Not only does the family appreciate the new kitchen, the family’s four-legged friends also enjoy the homely room.

Moisture damage and pest infestation

The old kitchen that was in place in the house was damp and pest-infested. The base cabinets were also far from the dimensions of a standard kitchen today, and in order to make room for a dishwasher, sink and a satisfactory work surface, the old kitchen unfortunately had to be removed. The crescent-shaped upper cabinet, however, was obviously reusable, as were the open shelves and the corner pantry in pearl tongue.

“However, I saved all the kitchen doors from the old kitchen and a few years later I made something completely new out of them!”

The light from the hall shines all the way into the kitchen.
The refrigerator is placed in the adjacent hall along with on-site interior design of the old kitchen doors.
Wood stove and modern stove complement each other nicely.

The old kitchen doors were used to build custom-built interior design for the hall. The cabinets were painted with linseed oil paint in a yellow color with a lot of iron oxide yellow in it.

– A rather funny compromise is that the fridge and freezer did not fit in the kitchen and instead is in the hall, which is the adjacent room, says Frida.
There was a lot of work that needed to be done when the family got the keys to the house.
Many hours are spent setting up the kitchen to be able to start cooking.

The Ursprungsköket had a working height of about 70 cm, which is a low working height and typical for older kitchens. In practical terms, it didn’t work for the family and in their new kitchen the working height is according to modern standards, i.e. 90 cm.

The couple chose to keep the green colour, but chose to choose a slightly lighter tone.

About the removable kitchen socle

Frida and Pontus have chosen to make a special solution when it comes to the kitchen plinth. The couple wanted a surface-mounted plinth and instead of making a permanent attachment, they installed magnetic locks.

Frida explains;

– The solution is very simple; the base is clicked into place with magnetic locks that are intended for cabinet doors. The magnet itself is mounted on the bottom edge of the cabinet modules and the metal piece on the base.
– The main reason we actually chose to make the base removable is that we didn’t know whether we would be comfortable with an external base, ergonomically speaking, with feet measuring 41 and 48 respectively. So we didn’t want to attach it permanently, but it has actually proven to work well without the slightest back problems.
