Green shaker kitchen in Toarp Eco Village

A shaker kitchen in Toarp Eco Village

Toarps Ekoby is a residential village with an ecological profile located near Oxie just outside Malmö in Skåne. The area was built with an ecological focus and was completed in 1992, designed by architect Krister Wiberg.

The green shaker kitchen.

A surface that is perfect for homework, baking or guests.

The location is rural with open fields and nature all around. And what’s more – common areas and facilities are included: A green area of approximately 2.7 hectares with fruit trees, cultivation plots, chicken and duck farms, as well as buildings such as a sauna, laundry room, guest rooms and a preschool with nature education.

The stone is “Verde Maritaca”.

Integrated lighting above the stove.

Social community and environmental responsibility are important parts of the ecovillage: members participate in joint workdays for maintenance, and the village has a non-profit association that organizes activities such as a flea market, crayfish festival, Walpurgis fair celebrations, and more.

Plenty of workspace.
Many drawers = much space for organized storage

When Francine and Henning renovated the kitchen, it was important that the kitchen would resonate with the eco-village’s view of sustainability. The existing kitchen was run-down and impractical and when renovating, it is important to think about sustainability and the possibility of actually being able to maintain the kitchen. To avoid wear and tear. The choice therefore fell on a kitchen from Skandinaviska Shakerkök.

“We are both tall, so we wanted a higher working height. The dishwasher is also raised to a better level for us”

– Francine

Oven and microwave are integrated.
The raised dishwasher in the custom-made module.

Raised dishwasher

Another important aspect was that the kitchen should be adapted to their needs and wishes. One of their wishes was a higher working height, as they are both tall.

The plinth is therefore higher than standard. And the dishwasher is also carefully placed in a specially adapted module with a drawer under the dishwasher. This way the dishwasher is higher up and it is easier for them to fill and empty.
